FROM OPERATING TO PRODUCING
Wrapping it up, is usually the end of the story but for WGR it was only the beginning.
While working in the City, co-founder Tayub’s favourite spot for lunch was a concept called Wrap It Up! He loved it so much he convinced the owners to sell him the very first franchise. Fast forward 5 years and he’d built up an estate of 22 stores in London. During that journey Tayub realised that by centralising all production in one kitchen he could increase the consistency of the product, reduce labour in the stores, acquire sites with a smaller back of house and generally increase the profitability of the business.
Then Covid hit and everything changed. City workers were no longer going to the office, the streets were empty and quick thinking Tayub knew he had to do something to survive. After receiving a call from the NHS requesting prepared meals for their staff canteen he commenced producing meals for them. Word spread amongst the NHS and within a matter of weeks the central kitchen was producing up to 20,000 meals a week.
During this time the lightbulb moment happened. The world had been turned upside down and the challenges facing the hospitality industry were clear to see. Tayub & his co founder Naureen closed all their company owned stores and WGR Foods was born. A bespoke food manufacturer with a mission to help hospitality operators flourish in these challenging times.
Since then, only by word of mouth, WGR has quietly grown a reputation for those in the know as one the most premium, bespoke food manufacturers in the UK. Having built a client base ranging form the hottest independent operators to multi site, national institutions.
